An Appeal For The Rehabilitation Of Calabar-Odukpani-Itu-Ikot Ekpene Highway - Dr. Amadu Atai
The All Progressives Congress in Akwa Ibom State has called on the Federal Government to urgently dualise Calabar-Itu highway, as the project had been captured in the 2016 budget.
A statement addressed to the Minister of Works, Babatunde Fashola, and signed by the state Chairman of the party, Dr. Amadu Atai, on Sunday, said the road has become impassable following more than 16 years of total neglect of the thoroughfare.
According to him, travelling along the Odukpani-Itu-Ikot Ekpene stretch of the road is now a tortuous and nightmarish experience for Nigerians. He added that the road had become a veritable death trap, saying that many people had lost their lives to accidents on the road.
The statement urged the government to take some critical interim and palliative measures by mending the extremely bad sections of the road to ease the travails of commuters, pending the completion of the dualisation of that axis.
“Honourable minister, please permit us to respectfully call your attention to the current deplorable state of an axis of the federal highway. Arising from more than 16 years of total neglect of this road, it is presently in its most pitiable and dilapidated condition.
“Because of this condition, travelling along the Odukpani-Itu-Ikot Ekpene stretch of the road is now a tortuous and nightmarish experience for our people. Indeed, it is a veritable death trap as several innocent lives have been lost to accidents at fatal spots along this road,” the statement added.

Dear Sir,
AN APPEAL FOR THE REHABILITATION OF ODUKPANI-ITU-IKOT EKPENE HIGHWAY.
On behalf of the good people of Akwa Ibom State, the leadership of our great Party write to express our profound gratitude to you in particular and to the Federal Executive Council, FEC of our APC Federal Government in general for the critical and progressive step taken by our new government, as captured in the 2016 Federal Budget, to promptly commence the dualisation of the Odukpani-Itu-Ikot Ekpene axis of the Federal highway to facilitate the smooth transportation of people, goods and services.
We are certain that this dualisation project will have significant and gratifying socio-economic outcomes for not only Akwa Ibom people but also for the people of the South-South and South-East regions as a whole.
Honourable Minister, please permit us to respectfully call your attention to the current deplorable state of an axis of the Federal highway. Arising from more than sixteen years of total neglect of this road, it is presently in its most pitiable and dilapidated condition.
Because of this condition, travelling along the Odukpani-Itu-Ikot Ekpene stretch of the road is now a tortuous and nightmarish experience for our people. Indeed, it is a veritable death trap as several innocent lives have been lost to accidents at fatal spots along this road.
Dear Minister, if this road were in good condition, it will take an average of one hour thirty minutes to travel from Calabar to Ikot Ekpene and/or Uyo. However, the present deplorable state of the road has spiked the trip duration to about seven hours and in some cases nine hours. This is especially exacerbated during vehicular gridlock usually precipitated when oil tankers, trailers and other heavy duty vehicles lose control and are overturned at any of the numerous bad spots along the road.
Against the foregoing, the APC leadership in Akwa Ibom State most respectfully implore you to use your good office to take some critical interim and palliative measures by mending the several extremely bad sections of the road so as to ease the travails of commuters pending the completion of the dualisation of that axis of Federal highway.
Given the progressive and people-oriented stance of our APC Federal governemnt, we are convinced that our appeal shall meet your kind considerations.
Please accept the assurances of our highest esteem.
Yours Faithfully,
Dr. Amadu Attai
State Chairman
APC, Akwa Ibom State.
