Reuben Abati: How To Know Nigeria’s Recession Is Real

Image
There have been interesting arguments over Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun’s observation that recession is just a word, and NAN MD, Bayo Onanuga claiming that reports of hardship in the land is exaggerated propaganda. I think we need to break down the subject further from a layman’s perspective. Recession is a word, no doubt, but it is more than a word, it is an experience: the experience that the majority of Nigerians is going through. If you are at a significant remove from that experience, it may be difficult to know how it feels, and if you are an economist, you are likely to be conveniently obsessed with textbook ideas. Recession is when Nigerians begin to shift the traditional dates for social parties. You know we love parties a lot. Virtually every weekend, there is one party or the other, very loud celebrations where people wear the famous aso ebi, and the Naira becomes a flying object, being thrown all over the place, at the musician, the celebrant, and her friends and f

Former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, Sues EFCC Over Frozen $31.4 Million

Dame Patience Jonathan, Nigeria’s former first lady, has sued the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFFC, over the illegal freezing of accounts amounting to $31.4 million involved in an alleged fraud cases. The supposed money is placed on a ‘no debit’ order by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. In a suit filed at a federal high court on Tuesday, September 6, 2016, is requesting the court for the enforcement of her fundamental rights. The EFCC and Skye Bank Plc were named as defendants in the suit. A former presidential aide, Amajuoyi Azubike Briggs, a former Skye Bank official, Damola Bolodeoku, Pluto Property and Investment Company Limited and Avalon Global Property Development Company Limited, all who are allegedly without addresses are in court with the EFCC over the accounts with the funds. By this lawsuit, Dame Patience Jonathan is claiming ownership of the money. Mrs. Jonathan asked the court to make a declaration that the fund standing to the cred

‘Husband Is A Master Not An Equal To His Wife’- Pastor Chris Oyakhilome.

Image
Popular pastor, Chris Oyakhilome is in “hot soup” for a message he recently preached on the role of a husband in a woman’s life and in the home. A divorcee, Oyakhilome, the senior pastor of the Christ Embassy Ministries, said that a husband and wife are not equal and that the husband is meant to lord over the wife. The sermon titled, Who is a Husband and What Is His Role, has not been well received by women in Nigeria. Pastor Chris blamed fathers for not teaching their daughters about marriage and who a husband is. Below is an excerpt of the sermon and a video of the controversial sermon below it. Husband does not mean the male partner in a marriage, husband means master. The reason for most problems in Christian marriages is the fact that women refute God’s definition of marriage and form theirs. They believe they are equal partners. If most women had their fathers bold enough to talk to them, they will be very successful in their marriage and they will be very happy people. Mos

Dele Momodu: Unveiling President Muhammadu Buhari’s Complex Character.

Image
Fellow Nigerians, I doubt if there is anyone who does not see and feel President Muhammadu Buhari is a complex character. As a matter of fact, that is the veritable hallmark of his persona and super brand. Those of us that supported him voluntarily, and almost blindly, last year did so out of our acute frustration with Project Nigeria. There were those who hated his guts but still went ahead to vote for him because they expected him to wave the fabled magic wand and bring sanity and succour to our insane clime. What no one bargained for was the repercussion, and reverberation, of such venture and adventure. As always, Nigerians felt their situation could never be worse under Buhari than that of the 16-year rule of profligacy of the PDP and the squander-manic regime of President Goodluck Jonathan. The APC operatives ran a blistering campaign with active collaboration and connivance from some of us. On the matter of the continuation of the Jonathan Presidency, there was no negotiatio

The photo of this sleeping fruit seller and her child will move you to pity.

Times are hard! The present economy does not support frivolous spending. People barely have enough to eat; children are hunger stricken while their parents feel helpless. We all know how bad things could go when a nation is experiencing economic recession. Poverty will turn many people into criminals. It is only the faithful ones that will not deviate from their strict morals. The economic recession has affected virtually every sector; trade is no longer booming because people will rather buy on credit; it is pathetic watching small scale businesses fail due to lack of funding. If we have to mention all the problems faced by people in the society, we may not be able to move forward from that point. The picture of this sleeping fruit seller and her child has evoked different reactions from people. This picture will remind you of the daily struggle of an average Nigerian. Even the rich are starting to cry because businesses are starting to fail. The sleeping fruit seller and her ch

TYRANNY: Police Takeover Unity Fountain, Venue Of Bring Back Our Girls Protest.

Image
The Nigerian Police Force on Thursday, September 8, 2016 has taken over the Unity Fountain protest ground of Bring Back Our Girls movement in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, apparently to stall any form of protest by the group which is pressing for the recovery of the over 200 secondary school girls from Chibok Community in Borno State, North-East of Nigeria. The girls were abducted from their dormitory in mid-April 2014 by Boko Haram terrorists. The seizure of the ground by the police came hours after the Inspector-General, Ibrahim Idris, claimed that the BBOG’s protest constitutes a security breach. Reacting to the new development, a BBOG leader, Aisha Yesufu, angrily said: “We are used to it. We were once called Boko Haram sympathisers and psychological terrorists.” She claimed that “APC desperately wanted to use BBOG for their campaigns, which we resisted.”

Reports of hardship in Nigeria ‘mere propaganda’ – NAN chief, Bayo Onanuga.

Image
The Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria, Bayo Onanuga, has come under fire after accusing the Nigerian media of embellishing reports about the country’s economic crisis that has left families struggling to survive. Mr. Onanuga accused the media of “over-sensationalization”, and said reports about hardship appeared to be a “mere propaganda”, inflamed by those who lost the 2015 election. In a Facebook post Tuesday, Mr. Onanuga said his findings showed that the cost of food items had not gone up, contrary to reports in the media. “I was in Bauchi and Jos at the weekend, I also found that food was cheap everywhere,” said Mr. Onanuga, who appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari last May. “In our hotel, we paid about N700 for a plate of semovita, or eba with a choice of cat fish or chicken. “On the roadside, I found to my surprise that with just N1000, I bought over 50 oranges, two giant water melon and 10 pieces of sweet potato. “I had experienced a similar thing in the m

US Congressman writes to US Secretary of state, John Kerry, accuses Buhari of autocratic tendencies, selective Anti-Graft war

Image
Tom Marino, a United States of American, U.S, Congressman, has written a letter to John Kerry, the U.S Secretary of State, urging him to withhold the assistance rendered to Nigeria, based on the “autocratic tendencies” of President Muhammadu Buhari. In the letter, which THISDAY said it exclusively obtained, on Sunday September 4, Marino, claimed that there were a number of warning signs emerging in the current administration. He also expressed concern over Nigeria’s anti-corruption war, saying, “of additional concern is President Buhari’s selective anti-corruption drive, which has focused almost exclusively on members of the opposition party, over-looking corruption among some of Buhari’s closest Advisors. Politicising his anti-corruption efforts, has only reinforced hostility among Southerners”. He asked the U.S to refrain from selling war planes and other military equipment to Nigeria, until Buhari establishes a track record of working towards inclusion. “I am encouraged by t

IMPLEMENTATION OF SINGLE TREASURY ACCOUNT IS THE FOUNDATION OF NIGERIA ECONOMIC CRISIS By Sen. Bassey Albert

Image
As a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I believe the foundation of the current economic crisis began with the implementation of the Single Treasury Account which led to the withdrawal of over 3Trillion Naira from the banking sector within 3months to the Central Bank of Nigeria without giving the Banking sector adequate notice before implementing TSA. Most of these funds were tied to various investable assets by the banks , some even long term. Calling off these assets in such a very short period has resulted in Asset mismatching and the crisis in this sector in the last even including commercial lending rates in the last couple of months and currently at 29%pa and over 40% pa on banks defaults rates. The questions I want to serious ask are as follows: 1. What level of interest income is being generated by this monies by the CBN? 2. What was the interest income paid by the various commercial banks when the had these deposits before the implementation of the TSA? 3. What wa

AFCON 2017 Qualifiers| Iheanacho helps Nigeria to slim win over Tanzania

Image
Kelechi Iheanacho saved the day for Nigeria, scoring the only goal as the Super Eagles laboured to a slim 1-0 win over Tanzania in their final game of the AFCON 2017 Qualifiers. Despite the huge crowd cheering them on at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Saturday, the Eagles had to wait till the 78th minute before they could register the first and only goal of the game. Tanzania keeper Manula gave a man-of-the-match display, stopping the Eagles on a number of occasions. But the shot-stopper had no answer to Iheanacho’s thunderbolt in the 78th minute. Saturday’s win was the only one recorded by Nigeria in the AFCON 2017 Qualifiers as they finish with five points in four games. Egypt, on their part, topped the group with unassailable 10 points from same number of games like the Super Eagles. Email

Basira Binuyo, 55, was arrested during the outward screening of passengers on an Emirate flight to Medina through Dubai. “She has so far excreted 76 pellets of drugs that tested positive for cocaine,” said Hamisu Lawan, NDLEA commander at the Abuja airport. “Meanwhile, she is still under observation until the drugs are completely expelled.” Mrs. Binuyo hails from Irepodun local government area of Kwara State and is married with three children. Mrs. Binuyo, a trader at Dosumu market, Lagos, was quoted as saying she needed money to expand her business. “I wanted to expand my cosmetic business but I have no money,”she said. “My sponsor offered to foot my expenses to Saudi on pilgrimage. Bughari - Charly Boy writes open letter to president Buhari

Read his piece below... Mr President Sir, I trust that this meets you well. I know it has not been easy since you came on board, so many wahalas, so much yawa, frustration and hopelessness. First rule of leadership: everything is your fault. Sir, Nigerians are surely dying and, quickly. They can no longer see the light, they feel the Heat. The welfare of the common man must be your top priority henceforth or God forbid, Nigeria and Nigerians will die in your hands. Since you assumed office as President of Nigeria, there has been a remarkable dissonance within your government. I wonder who is in charge. Sometimes I wonder whose thoughts you're thinking or whose agenda you're executing; while at other times, I wonder if you are held hostage by the gangsters called The Cabal. Can you say you are oblivious of the hardship and suffering we all are going through? I remember two years ago when I visited the Aso villa, then occupied by your predecessor. During our discussion an

Pastor Found With 13 Underage Girls As Sex Slaves, Blames Satan

Image
On a normal day, 36-year-old Chukwuemeka Nwocha, the General Overseer of Tongue of Fire Restoration Ministry located in Igbosere, Lagos, is a ‘man of God’ that his congregation, both young and old, called “Daddy”. But on Friday, as he was being paraded before journalists at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja, he was no longer a “spiritual daddy” but a suspect who harboured 13 underaged girls as sex slaves in a three-bedroomed harem. Fair complexioned and soft-spoken, Nwocha did not come across as someone capable of such crime. When he started to talk about what he did before journalists, he started by saying “By His Grace,” a statement that elicited a laugh of derision from all present. According to Nwocha, it all started when the children in his church, who called him, “Daddy, daddy” told him they would like to visit him. He said, “I only tried to help the girls. When the first girl came, she said she did not have anywhere to go. I did not know her parents. I

Ondo 2016: Akeredolu defeats Tinubu’s candidate at APC primary

Image
In what is clearly a keenly contested All Progressives Congress primary election, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) was on Saturday elected candidate of the party for the November 26 governorship election. It is the second time he is emerging candidate of the party, as he was the candidate in the 2012 governorship election. In Saturday’s election, he defeated Olusegun Abraham, the preferred candidate of the National Leader, Bola Ahmed Tunubu, by 669 votes. Mr. Abraham, an international businessman and a one-time Chairman of Owena Motel under Governor Adefarati, scored 635 votes to place second in the race. He was a governorship aspirant in 2012 on the platform of the defunct ACN but was pressured to step down for Rotimi Akeredolu who flew the party’s flag at the time. Despite the initial controversy over alleged imposition of Mr. Abraham on the party, the results showed that the election was keenly contested with all the major aspirants showing political strength. Although 24 persons vied

Gunmen Abducts 14 Oil Workers In Rivers

Image
Some unknown gunmen, believed to be militants, on Friday, September 2, 2016, abducted 14 staff members of Nestoil Plc in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, ONELGA, of Rivers State. The incident occurred along Omoku /Elele road, when the oil workers were returning from work to their base in Port Harcourt. It was gathered that the company bus conveying the workers to their office in Port Harcourt was accosted by heavily armed men, adding that the oil workers were diverted to an unknown destination at gunpoint, reports the Daily Sun. When contacted, the Rivers Police command spokesperson, Omoni Nnamdi, a deputy superintendent of police, confirmed the incident, saying, they had recovered the bus. Nnamdi said police detectives had intensified efforts to track down the hoodlums and rescue the victims. “We are combing the bush in that area. Our men are all over the bush. We are on top of the matter; we are doing our best to rescue the victims and apprehend the kidnappers”, he sai

Anglican Bishop Declares He Is Gay And He Has A Long-Term Boyfriend

Image
The Bishop of Grantham has publicly declared that he is gay and he is in a relationship, making him the first Church of England bishop to do so. A suffragan in Lincoln diocese, Bishop Nicholas Chamberlain who was consecrated in 2015 by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby has publicly announced that he is gay, reportedly because British newspaper had threatened the expose him. The Archbishop of Canterbury had said he knew that Chamberlain was gay when he made him bishop, adding that the bishop is in a “long-term and committed” relationship. Archbishop Welby also said: “His appointment as bishop of Grantham was made on the basis of his skills and calling to serve the Church in the Diocese of Lincoln. He lives within the bishops’ guidelines and his sexuality is completely irrelevant to his office.” Bishop Chamberlain had also said that his sexuality still is in accordance with church guidelines which says gay clergy must remain celibate. BBC reports that the church had said,

Mark Zuckerberg Returns To Nigeria, Meets Buhari In Aso Rock

Image
President Muhammadu Buhari Friday in Abuja commended the Chief Executive Officer and founder of social networking website, Facebook, Mark Elliot Zuckerberg, for sharing his wealth of knowledge with Nigerian youth, and inspiring a new generation of entrepreneurs. Receiving the internet entrepreneur at the State House, Abuja, President Buhari said the various meetings held with Nigerian youth since his arrival were most timely as the country was already exploring opportunities to spur development through entrepreneurship. “Nigeria has always been identified as a country with great potentials for growth, especially with our youthful population, but now we are moving beyond the potentials to reality. “I am impressed by your simplicity in sharing your knowledge and wealth with those with less income,’’ the president said. President Buhari noted that the simplicity and magnanimity of the entrepreneur, who is among the world’s richest men, had also challenged the culture of lavish wealth

Goodluck Jonathan; Nigeria’s ‘Worst’ President Turned Best Ex-President

Image
Few men in the history of any nation are as privileged and fortunate, as former President Goodluck Jonathan, to have held every important position of authority and power, consecutively for 16 unbroken years. First elected in 1999 as deputy governor, then governor in 2005, later as vice president in 2007 and finally in 2010 as president and commander in chief of the armed forces of the Nigerian federation. Reputed to be amiable, simple and meek; his steady rise to power has been attributed more to divine providence and sheer luck, as his first name implies than any track record of proven competence and capacity at statecraft. Born on 20th Nov, 1957 in the riverine community of Otuoke in Bayelsa State, to Ijaw parents, Goodluck Jonathan is no doubt Nigeria’s greatest personal beneficiary of the 4th republic. Expectedly, no literature is exhaustive and no consensus of opinion yet about his stewardship as president between may 6th 2010 and may 29th 2015, because it may be too early to fu

14 ways to perform your best in high-pressure situations

Image
Let's get this out of the way right now: Nobody performs well under pressure. A lot of us think we do, but we don't, or, at least, we don't perform as well as we could perform. We may feel more creative when we're under the gun, but it's a feeling, not a reality. It's true that you might be more productive, but the products you create are usually worse. In their book, "Performing Under Pressure: The Science of Doing Your Best When It Matters Most," Hendrie Weisinger and J.P. Pawliw-Fry deliver the sad truth: The difference between regular people and ultra-successful people is not that the latter group thrives under pressure. It's that they're better able to mitigate its negative effects. Or maybe that's good news, because, as the authors lay out in the book, handling pressure is a skill, and you can learn it. In the book, they offer 22 tactics for doing your best when the heat is on. Here are 14 of our favorites: Think of high-pressu

Brazilian President, Dilma Rousseff, Impeached

Image
Brazil’s Senate voted 61-20 Wednesday, August 31, 2016 to remove President Dilma Rousseff from office, finding her guilty of breaking budgetary laws in an impeachment trial, CNN reports. The impeachment process which has finally ended today, has dragged on for months. In May 2016, Rousseff was suspended in May. At the time, Rousseff called the impeachment proceedings an attempt at a “power grab by her rivals“. She alleged political sabotage of her administration by her rivals. “When Brazil or when a president is impeached for a crime that they have not committed, the name we have for this in democracy — it’s not an impeachment, it is a coup,” she said after the Senate voted to launch the proceedings. With her ouster, Michel Temer, 75, Rousseff’s one-time vice president who’s been serving as interim president since her suspension, will assume the office of president and serve out the remainder of her second term. Rousseff, 68, Brazil’s first-ever female head of state and a former
