Mother In India Gives Birth To ‘Heaviest Baby Girl Ever Born’, According To Doctors

Image
An Indian woman has given birth to a 15lb (6.8kg) baby girl that doctors say could possibly be the heaviest child ever born in the country. The infant weighs the same as a six-month-old in a country where new-born babies normally weigh 2.5-3.5kg. Her mother Nandini, 20, gave birth by a Caesarean section, at a hospital in the southern state of Karnataka. Doctors said they were conducting tests to find out the reason why the baby was so heavy. "It is the biggest baby in India, I can say. Whether it is the biggest in the world, I cannot say right now," Dr Venkatesh R, district health official in Hassan district, told BBC Hindi's Imran Qureshi. The baby is not just heavy, she is also very tall, doctors said. "The baby's height is 62cm (24.4in) as against the normal Indian baby's height of 50cm," said Dr SR Kumar, who is looking after Nandini and her baby. Since overweight newborns are normal in cases where the mother is diabetic, the first thing the d

I didn’t promise regular power in six months –Fashola

Image
The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), has denied ever saying as the then Governor of Lagos State that if given a chance, he could fix the problem of electricity in Nigeria within six months. Fashola, who was speaking during a programme on the Nigerian Television Authority Network on Tuesday, which was monitored by our correspondent, urged those crediting the statement to him to stop peddling falsehood. The minister challenged anyone with a recording of where he had boasted that he could provide regular electricity to Nigerians within six months to publish such, insisting that he had only promised that he could supply a community in the Lekki area of Lagos with power from an Independent Power Project in the state within six months with the permission to do so. He said, “I have heard that I said that electricity problem will be solved in six months. I have never made the statement. Anybody who has a video of where I said this should please make it p

Why you haven’t met your goals.

When we opt for the elevator over the stairs, swear we’ll start eating healthier on Monday, or skip that morning workout, we tend to blame our lack of self-control and willpower. But what if this lack of self-control is just a cop out? After all, any time you engage in self-sabotaging behavior, it’s easy to convince yourself that it’s because you’re weak or lazy to allow yourself to continue doing what you’re doing. But maybe the underlying reason why you “can’t” just pass the elevator, “can’t” say no to the cookie, or “can’t” get off the couch to go to the gym is that you haven’t recognized your priorities and what you truly value: your why. Without knowing your why, it’s much harder to align your actions—no matter how big or small—with what you want to work. Self-control still matters Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying self-control is dumb and unnecessary. We still need self-control to beat our impulsive nature into submission and help us toward what’s good for us instead of wh

If you are clean, probe the sources of your 2015 campaign funds - PDP dares Buhari.

Image
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate the source of funds used for his political campaign in 2015. The national executive committee (NEC) of the party in its resolution on Tuesday described the probe of its members by the Buhari government as selective and an attempt to silence the opposition. It, therefore, urged the government to go after governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who have allegations of misuse of public funds “hanging on their necks”, and not just after members of the PDP. According to the six-point resolution released in a statement by Chinwe Nnorom, PDP head of publicity, the party condemned the “hounding” of its members by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and demanded their immediate release from detention. Below is a copy of the resolutions. The NEC was well attended and has the National Chairman, H.E. Sen. (Dr.) Ali Modu Sheriff, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekwerema

We increased fuel price because Nigeria’s broke — LAI MOHAMMED

Image
Federal Government on Wednesday summed up the reasons for the all-time increase in the pump price of fuel, saying that it was broke and needed to raise money to keep the system afloat. The government said that Nigeria's foreign earnings had drastically waned in the recent times that the only way out of the financial quagmire was to look inwards to generate more money. Information Minister, Mr. Lai Mohammadu made the disclosure while briefing the State House Correspondents alongside his colleagues, the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami and Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola and Labour Minister, Dr. Chris Ngigie at the end of the Federal Executive Council meeting, chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari. Chief Ayo Adebanjo, elder statesman, and a leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere. In an interview with Robert Awokuse, a National Mirror correspondent, accused president Muhammadu Buhari’s administration for it inability to solve problems confronting the nation. He said that Buhari struggled to get power for good 16 years yet, he has no clue about Nigeria's problems. Excerpts: In less than three weeks President Muhammadu Buhari will be one year in office. What is your assessment of the president so far? Buhari to me in the last one year has not been impressive. But he has done very well in anti-corruption crusade. But the only reservation I have about that is that he is doing it with disregard for the rule of law which I don’’t like, for instance, the ruling on Dasuki and some others. He can still get what he wants without disregard for the law. That is the minus I give him there. For all the things he promised that he was going to do, I score him 95 per ce

Abuja – A Pediatrician based in Abuja, Mr Chibuzor Eze has threatened to divorce his wife of so many years for her addiction to popular foreign soap operas, Telemundo and Zeeworld. “I will divorce my wife if she doesn’t stop with this Zeeworld and Telemundo obsession,” Eze said on Thursday in Abuja. Eze, who works with one of the government hospitals in Abuja, said he had informed his wife, Dorothy a week ago that her obsession to the popular soaps was interfering with her marital life. “I told her last week that I was fed up with how her obsession with these channels was making her to neglect her duty as a wife and mother. “Yet she keeps watching these shows when she’s supposed to be partaking in more important things like taking care of the children and cooking reasonable food for us,” Eze said. The pediatrician said he had to buy food from restaurants four times last week, as his wife had either forgotten to prepare food for the family or burnt the food she was preparing because s

Abuja - The Nation Industrial Court has restrained the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and other labour unions from embarking on their proposed strike on Wednesday. The Federal Government had on Tuesday dragged the NLC, TUC and their affiliates before the National Industrial Court seeking to stop the looming strike threatened by the Labour group over the fuel pump price increment. The Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN) was said to have led the federal government's team before the industrial court led by Justice Babatunde Adejumo, the President. When asked by the presiding judge, how the AGF knew the NLC was planning to go on strike Malami said he saw a statement issued by the labour union on their website and that the statement had been published by the media. The meeting between the labour unions and the federal government on Monday was deadlocked as both parties refused to shift ground. The labour unions had asked the federal government to reverse to t

Supreme Court decries Mobil’s reluctance to prosecute appeal

The Supreme Court has decried the reluctance of Mobil Producing Unlimited (MPU) to prosecute an appeal it filed in 2010 against the May 21, 2009 judgment of the Court of Appeal, Calabar. The appellate court had held that about 860 Nigerian Mobil workers hired as security guards between 1990 and 1996 were its staff and not officials of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) as the company claimed. A five-man panel of the apex court, led by Justice Suleiman Galadima, noted that the appellant appeared unwilling to prosecute the appeal. It urged Mobil to be certain about what it intends to achieve with the appeal. The court’s position was informed by the uncoordinated approach of the appellant’s lawyers and the consistency in the errors they commited in the filing of applications, which often led to adjournments. When the case was called on April 25, Mobil’s lawyer, Rowland Obaji sought leave of court for an extension of time to file an appeal and deem the already filed amended appeal as p
