STAYING SAFE WHEN SHOPPING ONLINE

Staying safe when shopping online is something that’s becoming increasingly important. While the majority of Brits believe it’s their own responsibility to ensure they have a safe internet experience, more than half of us are not taking simple actions to protect ourselves online. According to the most recent National Cyber Security Consumer Tracker conducted by the Government, 57% of Brits don't always check websites are secure before making a purchase and less than a third (30%) habitually use complex passwords to protect online accounts. This highlights that we don't take the same precautions when shopping online as we do when purchasing on the High Street. While we wouldn't walk around with an open bag or our wallet on show, we're quite happy to take unnecessary risks with our credit cards when shopping online. With this in mind, the Government has launched a new campaign to encourage web users to protect themselves so they don't fall victim to cyber crime. The 'Cyber Streetwise' campaign is encouraging Brits to protect themselves and their families, with online videos and a host of hints, tips and advice on the website cyberstreetwise.com. 'The internet has radically changed the way we work and socialise. It has created a wealth of opportunities, but with these opportunities there are also threats. As a Government, we are taking the fight to cyber criminals wherever they are in the world,' said Security Minister James Brokenshire. 'By taking a few simple steps while online, the public can keep cyber criminals out and their information safe. Cyber Streetwise is an innovative new campaign that will provide everyone with the knowledge and confidence to make simple and effective changes to stay safe online.' The Government's research also shows that 48% of us are worried about identity theft and 52% are concerned about losing money when using the web. Around £4 billion has has been reported lost by Brits after their credit card details were stolen on the web. The campaign highlighted 5 simple steps we can take in order to protect ourselves from cybercrime: 1. Use strong, memorable passwords 2. Install anti-virus software on new devices 3. Check the privacy settings on your social media account 4. Always check online retail sites are secure 5. Download software and application patches when prompted Culled from: www.goodhousekeeping.co.uk
