The development prompted the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP senators, through the Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, to seek clarification. Akpabio, PDP, Akwa Ibom North West, raised a point of order, under matter of urgent importance, to find out why the Senate President had not announced the president’s letter containing ministerial nomin...

Akpabio says non-arrival of foreign doctors is delaying take-off of Akwa Ibom ‘world-class’ hospital.

Image
The delay in the arrival of foreign doctors, said to be waiting for clearance from relevant medical associations in Nigeria and work permit from the nation’s immigration service, is the main reason the 20th Anniversary Hospital in Akwa Ibom state is yet to start operation. A former governor of the state, Godswill Akpabio, made the disclosure while speaking at the 28th anniversary celebration of the state. Mr. Akpabio, minority leader of the Nigerian senate, said the ‘processes’ would be completed in “less than one month”. Mr. Akpabio had boasted close to the end of his reign that the N30 billion hospital built by his administration was ‘world-class’ in standard and higher in status than a teaching hospital. “We lose billions of dollars every year to medical trips abroad. We have also lost a lot of people, not because we don’t have the expertise in the country,” Mr. Akpabio said during the commissioning of the hospital. The former governor however stirred controversy recently when...

US and European Union diplomats said they were disappointed that Nigeria did not attend the event chaired by United Nations aid chief Stephen O’Brien on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Buhari Explains Why He Missed A Meeting On Boko Haram At The UN. FIFA president, Sepp Blatter, faces criminal investigation.

Image
The Swiss attorney general has announced criminal proceedings have been opened against outgoing FIFA president Sepp Blatter. The Swiss attorney general's office issued a statement saying Blatter is suspected of criminal mismanagement or misappropriation over a TV rights deal he signed with former Caribbean football chief Jack Warner in 2005. The 79-year-old is also suspected of 'a disloyal payment' of two million Swiss francs (£1.3 million) to UEFA president Michel Platini - who is the favourite to succeed him - in 2011. French football legend, Platini, claims the money was paid for work he carried out under contract for the world football's governing body. Under Swiss law, a payment is classified disloyal if it is against the best interests of the employer - in this case FIFA. A statement from the Swiss attorney general reads: 'Swiss criminal proceedings against the President of FIFA, Mr. Joseph Blatter, have been opened on 24 September 2015 on suspicion o...

Nigerian Army accuses Borno leaders of plotting to prolong Boko Haram insurgency.

Image
The Nigerian Army on Friday raised alarm over plans by “some highly-placed individuals” in the North East, particularly Borno State, to sabotage military operations in the region. A statement by the army spokesman, Sani Usman, said the elite were bent on having the activities of the Boko Haram terrorists prolonged for their selfish interests. Mr. Usman, a colonel, did not however state in clear terms the means through which the notable individuals were undermining the war against terrorism or how they would benefit from the insurgency when prolonged. “The Nigerian Army wishes to inform the public and send a very strong and serious final warning to some prominent individuals and political groups who hailed from Borno State in particular and North East generally, that there is information of plans by some highly placed individuals and political groups to undermine and scuttle the fight against terrorism and insurgency in this country. “The unscrupulous individuals and their cohorts ...

Buhari address to UN General Assembly.

Image
Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, I welcome you to this important event. Let me express Nigeria's sincere appreciation to UN-AIDS for the support and collaboration in organizing this event. 2. We are on the threshold of history as world leaders adopt the successor development agenda to the Millennium Development Goals. For over 30 years, HIV as a public health challenge has been causing havoc and untold hardship in virtually every part of the world. To date, several million children have been orphaned and some communities have been devastated, while economic activities have been disrupted. 3. Unfortunately, Sub -Saharan Africa bears a disproportionate burden of this epidemic. The good news is that the effort of the global community has resulted in greater control, less spread and better management. 4. Furthermore, we have made significant progress towards the interception of mother to child transmission of HIV. In 2014 alone, over 3million pregnant women were tested for HIV...

Eid Prayers Disrupted In Ilorin As Senate President Bukola Saraki Stoned.

Image
The Muslim Eid al-Adha prayers in Ilorin, capital of Kwara state were this morning disrupted as the country’s embattled Senate president, Bukola Saraki was pelted with stones and pure water sachets as he arrived in his car convoy. The chaos caused by the stoning of the senate president who has been charged with 13 counts of corruption and false asset declaration, caused the prayers to be disrupted with the loud speakers not calling the prayers and several thousands of faithfuls unable to say the prayers. People were gathered to patiently stone him after the prayers. NewsRescue reporters saw stones flying into the sky. The Senate president was reportedly disguised or covered up and whisked out of the grounds to save him from the anger of the crowds. This was the first Eid Saraki was attending as senate president.Kwara state has been slavishly under the control of Saraki and his late father for decades.

Here’s What Buhari’s Spokesman Femi Adesina Wrote About Saraki In 2013 [MUST READ].

Image
Former Kwara State governor and now senator representing Kwara Central, Dr. Bukola Saraki, was guest of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) earlier this week. According to reports, he was quizzed for many hours, and later allowed to go home. What questions did Saraki have to answer? His role in the collapsed Societe Generale Bank of Nigeria, where he was an Executive Director, and where depositors lost money in billions. Again, he was said to have been grilled on how he managed the finances of Kwara State as a two-term governor. Naturally, the fact that Saraki was quizzed by the EFCC should not have raised any dust. If he did things that demanded explanations while he held those two former positions, then he should be grilled. No one is above the law, and the fact that he is being questioned does not tantamount to automatic guilt. But there is this buzz going round about Saraki and his role in the fuel subsidy payments saga. Last year, he had raised a motion...

Arsene Wenger And Wife, Annie Split After Five Years Of Marriage.

Image
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has formally separated from his wife, according to reports. Wenger and his long-term partner Annie had a 'separation of bodies' judgment issued by a judge in Paris, meaning that they are free to see other people. Wenger is still expected to support Annie financially, The Sun reported. A source told the newspaper: 'They have divided up their assets and agreed a financial package to separate. 'They have not been happy for a while, and they decided this was the best course of action to take.' The judgment - which apparently shows that the pair have been living separately for several months - falls short of a complete divorce but legally states that they are no longer together. At the time, she told the Mail: 'I am not a good time girl. I don't go to the discotheque looking for footballers. I don't care about being famous. I don't want to be recognised in the street. 'I am not doing this for money. We were in love. ...

Image

Pope Francis assures atheists: You don’t have to believe in God to go to heaven.

Image
In comments likely to enhance his progressive reputation, Pope Francis has written a long, open letter to the founder of La Repubblica newspaper, Eugenio Scalfari, stating that non-believers would be forgiven by God if they followed their consciences. Responding to a list of questions published in the paper by Mr Scalfari, who is not a Roman Catholic, Francis wrote: “You ask me if the God of the Christians forgives those who don’t believe and who don’t seek the faith. I start by saying – and this is the fundamental thing – that God’s mercy has no limits if you go to him with a sincere and contrite heart. The issue for those who do not believe in God is to obey their conscience. “Sin, even for those who have no faith, exists when people disobey their conscience.” Robert Mickens, the Vatican correspondent for the Catholic journal The Tablet, said the pontiff’s comments were further evidence of his attempts to shake off the Catholic Church’s fusty image, reinforced by his extremely c...
